Workshop for Parents
Stewards of Children - A new and much needed workshop
Most parents are unaware of the prevalence, consequences and circumstances of child sexual abuse.
Most parents have limited knowledge of the steps and actions necessary to protect children from sexual abuse.
Less than 30% of parents discuss child sexual abuse with their children, and even more fail to tell the children that the offender might be a person they know.
In the Stewards of Children workshop you will:
1. Learn the facts about child sexual abuse
- How child sexual abuse commonly occurs.
- Why children often keep the abuse a secret.
- Behaviours of abusers.
- Do children harm other children?
- The effects of the abuse.
- Warning signs.
- How to minimise opportunity.
- What you need to know about responding.
- Who you can call if you need advice.
2. Teach Personal Safety
- When should you talk to children? What should you say?
- What safety skills and rules should you teach children?
- How can you practise safety skills?
3. A guide for parents when children are in the care of others
- Learn how to assess protection practices when selecting preschools, schools or other programs.
- Understand the importance of a well conceived one-adult/one-child policy.
- What questions should you ask before leaving children in the care of others.
- How can you screen and then monitor babysitters.
- Understand the proactive role organisations can take to educate their communities about child sexual abuse.
