Professional Education
A workshop for staff who work with children
Stewards of Children, is a revolutionary sexual abuse prevention training program that educates adults to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. The program believes and teaches that child safety is an adult's job.
The curriculum is ideal for organisations that provide services to children and youth, as well as other community-based groups who are:
- Seeking training for staff and volunteers in the prevention of child sexual abuse.
- Wanting to make a difference in their community by educating adults about the protection of children.
- Needing to respond to ‘duty of care' and insurance requirements regarding child protection.
- Wanting to enhance community training initiatives and develop potential sources of revenue.
After taking the Stewards training adults will:
- Understand the facts of child sexual abuse, including the incidence rates and effects on children, their families, and society
- Understand how child sexual abuse commonly occurs
- Understand that adults are responsible for the protection of children therefore adults need to know risks
- Learn how to minimise opportunity
- Understand why children keep the abuse a secret and how these barriers can be broken down.
- Understand the signs of sexual abuse that are often present and be alert to recognise these signs
- Know the steps that organisations can take to minimise opportunity
- Have resources to react responsibly to incidents of child sexual abuse
- Understand the proactive role that communities need to take to protect children and educate others about child sexual abuse
- Know how to respond to incidents of child sexual abuse, including how to react to a disclosure, reporting procedures, legal requirements and community resources
- What if you suspect abuse but are not sure?
